I'm not a chemist, but wouldn't it be hard to absorb enough chromium from a plated mouthpiece to do any harm to yourself? Stainless steel cooking and eating utensils are in common use and contain substantial amounts of chromium. The medical people have been piecing broken bodies back together again with plates, screws, wires and rods of stainless for decades. Aren't trace amounts of chromium necessary to one's health (just check the list of ingredients in your multivitamins)?

I'll grant that you might be able to ingest a flake of the stuff if you were playing on a mouthpiece that had peeling plating, but that seems rather unlikely, given the discomfort of what the razor-sharp edges of a peeling area would do to your lips.

This is pretty interesting stuff; I'd like to hear a scientifically informed opinion on this.
