I have been starting beginners for thhe past 18 years in the band program.
One thing I never worry about is a Mouthpiece and the size of the horn.
At this time i have 7th grade girls on tuba. Most are 4 foot 6 inches tall and
play on the old Martins and COnn 24 bell fronts with a bach 18
MP. We do breathing exercises every day as part of the warmup, Buzz alot on the mouthpiece. Work on long tones ETC. They get a sound that i want to copy.

The weight of the horn is the problem. I purchased DEG tuba stands from a local music store and that has solved the problem. The weight of the instrument is on the stand and not on them. Sometimes the simple things are the hardest to see.

Good Luck
