The Alexanders are interesting horns. The have a unique sound that is made up of mostly the fundamental pitch without many overtones. This gives them a rather dry sound that projects very well in large ensembles. The sound is similar to the Hirsbrunners in that respect. Chester Schmidt in Boston prefers his Alex to the Yorkbrunners and David Kirk in Houston is of the same feeling to my knowledge.
As to the pitch tendencies, Mr. Alexander was usually training 6 apprentices at a time back when he was running things. Because of this you would get one great horn with incrediby good intonation, and 6 bad ones.
The horns are still available in their catalogue to my knowledge but are too expensive to market in the states.
