Take the trip! You said it yourself: it is for"the long haul". There is no substitute for side by side comparisons. You will find differences between tubas with the same model #, let alone different models. By trying them out yourself you can choose EXACTLY the tuba you want "for the long haul."
Yes the difference is primarily cosmetic: but the extra nickle trim will change the sound somewhat. Still, you are going to be dropping 5 grand or so , what's an extra hundred bucks for a round trip ticket?
