The Alexander sound is dense and dark (a lot of fundemental), able to carry in large groups or be used in solo or chamber settings. The sound is unique and many people like it. Listen to the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington DC) recordings, the tubist
(Dave Bragunier) plays an Alexander (he is an excellent tubist).

The intonation is somewhat strange; but as others have said, it is possible to play an Alexander in tune. I have played an Alexander (four valve) since 1975 and I have not found a tuba that I like better.

About a fifth valve addition. The four valve Alexander has a long section of non-tapering
leadpipe before the valve section. It should be easy for a qualified repairman to add
a fifth valve.

good luck,
