Well, in 1970 I was a lowly sophmore at Leigh High School in San Jose,
at the time I was 1st chair 3rd clarinet, and the 1st chair 2nd and 1st
were both my age and rather better than I, so I felt that there were no "prospects" for advancement....and was rather bummed at that, since I had the kid-like attitude that
the 1st parts were the only important and interesting parts.
Our band director James Gerard announced that we needed another Sousaphone player to spell the school name on the bell covers in marching band, so I thought "what the heck" (apologies to Ed) and went for it...the rest is protracted and prolly boring "history"
