My old Zeiss has the same thing, and really, it does work best sitting on the chair rather than the lap. Works fine if your tummy isn't too large. :) I had my leadpipe height adjusted to fit me, and it's pretty darn comfortable to hold. Plus, it's nearly impossible to put a dent into that bottom bow because of that flange-type piece.

On a side note, I just got the bell annealed on that Zeiss (courtesy of Nate Griffith), and it sounds so much better now -- not as bright, but still with that fat, thick core to the sound. Now I like it almost as much as my VMI 3302, but in a different way.
