When I was in high school, I played tuba in Jazz Band. I siply played the 4th trombombone part down an octave. Our high school situation was a little different, as we were very short on t'bone players. It sounded very good, and it gave a little added bass to the section, a litle more bottom to the entire band. There are Jazz pieces out there that include a tuba part. You might want to ask your director if any of these are suitable.
