Through experience with different mouthpieces it does seem that some mouthpieces enables projection better than others. When I've first started playing tuba I've used a smaller mouthpiece (I don't know the exact size of it however it was smaller than the one that I use now) all of the time, however when I've gotten adjusted to the sound of the tuba and was forced to try a different and bigger mouthpiece I was able to produce a better, and bigger sounds than I used to due to the fact that my muscles where able to relax better with the bigger mouthpiece than the smaller mouthpiece. I see that some tuba teacher perfer to use different kinds of mouthpieces over others for the same reason.
