Right now, I do the same--leave the ring off and hook my thumb under the tube. While much better than the ring, it's still not really comfy.
I suppose that if I were to clamp the ring on the tube below the ferrule that the upper brace is attached to, I might find a halfway usable position for it, but I'm worried about damanging the tube in the process.
I'm very fortunate in that the leadpipe comes level with my mouth when the horn is sitting in my lap at a slight tilt. (I'm 6'4", but maybe I have a short trunk or fat thighs :) ).
