I go with the thoughts of Greg and Chuck. Take off the ring and hook your thumb on the vertical pipe it was connected to. I find the valves on my Eb work well enough that I don't need the leverage provided by the thumbring to finger it well. That's not the case with many other horns I've tried, but I swear to god those are the best set of valves I've played on. Just keep the thumbring for a Christmas tree ornament or keep it in your pocket as a reminder of how much money you spent :)
