I think an excellent place to start would be The Tuba Sourcebook - Morris & Goldstein, Indiana University Press ISBN 0-253-32889-6. It begins with a brief history and includes an excellent bibliography. When I purchased mine it is available directly from IU press at a discount, it should also be available from other sources.
