Another really good source is "The Tuba Family", Clifford Bevan: Faber & Faber.
I used this book many years ago on a research paper, and it covers the history from Serpent to present. It also has pictures of the first true tuba from 1835. I don't know if it's still in print, but a www.search will probably tell you.
