Jay,
I replaced the locking mechanism for the height with a larger bolt/wing-nut combination which I found at Lowe's. I put a small cotter-pin through the stand and the bolt to hold it in place. The wing-nut is much larger than the original which makes it easier to get the height adjustment tight (so it doesn't slip at inopportune times). The biggest problem I have had other than that is the top pad wearing off. So far, the best solution I have found is two wrist bands (like tennis players use) but it isn't great. Everything else seems to wear or fray etc.

I have seen a guy here that modified a drummers stool by adding a block on the front to hold the tuba. If the chair is big enough, I prefer a block of wood with a wrist band around it to hold the horn.
