Re: string bass soloists: perhaps not in the classical world, but jazz bassists (Ron Carter comes to mind) do lead their own bands (and get gigs).

Re: singers: I would have to agree that tenors usually play the heroes in opera, but the baritones or basses in oratorios often have the most God-like roles. In musical comedy, leading men are usually baritones (or basses---consider Ezio Pinza in South Pacific). Tenors usually play secondary characters, if not villians (consider Curly vs. Jud in Oklahoma!). Come to think of it, the tenors I most enjoy listening to (Bjorling, Domingo, my brother) have the most baritone-like tenor voices.
