Three things:

1) After Philip Jones retired, the group continued on as the London Brass. I'm not sure to what extent the personnel changed at that time, but London Brass are still playing and recording some very exciting music that is well worth hearing. They have some fantastic players, including Dave Stewart on bass trombone. He's sort of like the Dave Taylor of Britain - top jazzer, studio player, and also the bass trombonist in the London Phil.

2) Have any of you heard/read Philip Jones tribute cd and book to John Fletcher? The cd features many tracks of fantastic Fletcher-intensive cuts. The first half of the book is testimonials/rememberances/stories from Fletcher's friends and colleagues, the second half is a series of articles Fletcher wrote for a magazine over here during the 70's (including, funnily enough, one entitled "Is the Tuba a Solo Instrument") - These were available from Philip Jones, so I don't know who might sell them now. The proceeds go to a fund for scholarships for young brass musicians in Britain.

and probably most importantly,

3) He did so much for the advancement of brass music as both art form and entertainment that it seems like more people would have posted their sorrow at his passing. Hopefully everyone knows of his contributions to what we do and will pass it on to their students.
