a Hirsbrunner "York" model after repairing it. I'll be honest. The last time that I blew through one was over twenty years ago, and it was in one of those room-fulla-toobuhz situations - too noisy to be able to tell about anything. Mr. Pokorny allowed me to play the "real" York once. Although I was playing in in the basement of the hall next to its locker in a ridiculously overly-resonant room, the "real" York is an incredibly resonant instrument - a few, but surprizingly few, pitch problems.
Getting back to the Hirsbrunner "York" model that I just fixed and tooted: The upper G and high C (6th/8th partials) were a mile high, the bottom line G was flat, and "low" G was unfocused.
What's the big deal? I've played/owned LOTS of "jumbo" tubas like this thing (Holton's, RM-5/4's, Alex's.)
