Im not an expert on dyslexia by any stretch (just by the info I recieve from parents which I know is sometimes questionable), but the biggest problem as I understand it stemming from the condition is the lack of being able to read left to right hence the problem with seeing some of the alphabet in reverse - which is a good reason what that teacher was doing did not work so well. Think about this - what is a quarter note turned backwards? Still a quarter note. And the dyslexia (at least in the experience with my two kids) does not affect there vertical sence of reading direction and if so they are overcoming it rather well.
