Chuck's reason is quite right but there is also another answer to your question. With the 4th valve slide pulled out the way you describe (so that the low range is in tune as an F euphonium) try to play the C just below the bass clef staff. Use 4th valve and it's very flat. Try 1-3 and it is probably sharp. Same problem with the B natural beneath that. One of the benefits of the compensating system is that the extra tubing is only engaged when you need it. Now, if I could only find one that worked for me!
