I know that many people have used Amtrak with success. I must disagree that they handle it the least, though. I shipped a tuba via Greyhound awhile back. I personally was allowed to put the horn in the cargo bay of the bus and watch it take off. From there on out, it didn't get handled by anyone enroute to South Carolina. Cost: $85. Another thing, I filled the hard case with bubble wrap, wrapped the outside of the case with strapping tape so it wouldn't open and that's it. Horn went 1400 miles in less than 24 hours.
