When I was in the 9th grade, I switched from t-bone to tuba. I had two choices: Yamaha 641, or Conn 20-j. Both are large tubas. I chose the Yamaha for two reasons: 1) I could actually hold it in my lap, and 2) it had 4 valves.

Best bet: find the horn that gives you the sound you want, and get it. As far as filling it up, well, if you've played that much trombone, you'll be able to fill up most tubas fairly well. You may not have the, ahem, staying power of a lifelong tubist, but that will come fairly quickly with some practice and some lessons from the local pro.
