From Lillian Murphy, connected with the Chicago Civic

"We have been forced, due to institution-wide budget cuts, to reduce the size
of the orchestra next season. Therefore, there will be no percussion, low
brass, harp, or keyboard positions. This decision was made upon
consultation with Henry Fogel, Daniel Barenboim, and Cliff Colnot.

The conductors we are asking to work with us next season will be told about
the reduced orchestra and given a list of repertoire that fits the
instrumentation to guide their choices. If a conductor wishes to do a piece
that requires one of the instruments mentioned above, we will have to hire
out locally for that particular performance upon consultation with the
principal player of the CSO on that instrument.

This has been a very difficult decision for us; it is our hope that we will
only need to have this reduction for one season. Gene Pokorny is aware of
the situation.

Thank you for your interest in the Civic Orchestra."
