I was a sophomore in 1966 and switched from baritone horn (not euphonium) to a CC tuba. The concept is definitely not a new one.
I would guess the shift to playing CC tuba took place when there came a proliferation of tuba teachers at colleges and in public school private lesson programs. If a private teacher has a tuba of his/her own and it happens to be a CC, the good student wants to imitate the teacher. Some seem to be of the opinion that only the good students play on CC. Which student is it that takes private lessons more often than the others?
The argument as to the best tuba will continue as long as people can talk or write. The bulletin board has been down that path a bunch of times and there was not a winner before and there won't be one this time either.
