Sometimes during a rehearsal you can suddenly need to dump water from a tuning slide or fuss with a balky valve just at the moment when you know the other guy is going to blat loud enough to draw attention. No one can blame you for playing too loud if your face is away from the mouthpiece. Of course you can't do that more than once or twice, so plan it carefully.
