Dear Sir,
I couldn't agree with your comments more. My undergrad school also required all music majors to be enrolled in marching band every fall. In some ways though it was great fun. Not many people wanted to be there the band director knew most people felt this way. Our attitude was if we have to be here at least it will be fun. This revolution led to some of the sickest high volume playing and various other contests including; who wins the prize for cutting off last? In what octave would you like to play the fight song today? Let's turn all major chords into dimished by playing an entire song up a half step. And my personal favorite, you pick the articulation! Then when you get in trouble for all this, as a section, stop playing. Most chords then become first inversion and the band sounds totally weak.
Then after all this, get your Masters at a conservatory!
