Silver's no good. Neither is lacquer. Raw brass is terrible. Fiberglass -- don't go there. I much prefer about six coats of metallic green, another four of candy red, one of light purple, and another thirty coats of cellulose lacquer. Then, some pinstriping, fades, and murals of barbarian women & dragons. Plus, a lime green velvet French-pleated bottom bow protector.
I don't even care anymore, really. The look & sound is a matter of personal opinion (which I refuse to argue over), every finish will look worse as time goes on and repairs are made, and... well, I can't think of any other reason that people talk about.
