That's something I like about playing in a community orchestra, and much more, one with a director who doesn't really know what's going on. I take a bass-bone part, and a string bass part, play the bass bone part for added weight to the brass (either unison, or octaves, depends on the sound). Play the string bass part when the bass just isn't cutting through, or when its more interesting than the bass-bone part ;). Tacit when you can't get either to sound good (such as pizzacato, or trombone tutti ect).
