I've been playing a MW-2155 five-valve CC for 2 yrs. Besides all the
wonderful playing qualities of this horn, the 5th valve was a revelation!
It took awhile to get used to, both physically and mentally, and I'm still
fumbling around occasionally, but the effect on both sound and intonation is
just great. I always play Db below the staff and low Gb 2-3-5. and of course
use it for everything from there down, as Rick said. The 1st, 3rd, and 4th slides
on this horn are accesssible, so no, it's not absolutely necessary; but the
improvement in facility, sound, and intonation of those low notes (with hardly any
tromboning) is huge. I vote emphatically YES for the 5th valve.
