The old man's tuba is exactly what a tuba should be--extremely efficient and one which takes a big full relaxed quantity of air. In my experience the rotary volved tubas that are equivalent are: the Fafner, the 5/4 Rudy and the Alex. These horns, all of which I have or have owned, had exactly the same feel--and I think largely due to the bore, the bell and the resonance that one feels and hears. My Holton is very identical to the Fafner in feel, the difference is in the wider sound versus the focal center. They both have that old man's resonance and ease of playing.
