This is entirely second hand info, so it may not be correct, but I'm going to ask about it anyway. There was a horn workshop in AZ this past weekend (AIR horns,) which I was not able to attend due to work pressures, but a friend reported back to me. Sam Pilafian was there and showed my friend some stuff he does when he plays.

According to my friend, who observed this up close but who is not the best listener:

Sam plays dry, and he actually pushes his lips up and down his face with the mouthpiece for differing ranges. The shape of his embouchure inside the mouthpiece stays the same but pushing his lips up and down changes the direction of the air stream. My friend thought it was "push up" for low range and "push down" for high range.

Ok, it would be nice if Sam himself would reply to this, but assuming he doesn't, how do the better players react to this? (I doubt there are a lot of players on this BBS who are at Sam's level!!)
