I've seen LOTS more of the piston-valved YMs than the rotary valved ones. The single rotary sample that I got to play had slightly funky intonation (a very flat 3rd partial and strange upper register) and didn't seem to be as open and resonant as a comparable Miraphone 186.
I think Rick's right when he said the rotary model was probably made to satisfy the stylish demands of the 1960's US export market.
