Who says the left hand has to stay in place. It only has to stay in place when it has to operate the 6th valve. I also disagree with your assertion that the thumb is less agile then the fore finger of the opposite hand. The fifth valve is used most often in conjunction with the 4th valve. Do any sort of grasping exercise with your right hand and you will see that it is natural for the thumb to move in conjunction with the pinky. I'm of the philosophy that both the 5th and 6th valves should be operated with the thumb. I think it should be set up with 2 separate spatulas with rollers between them, like saxophone pinky spatulas.
