I couldn't agree more!!! My college marching band had 10 of the "over the shoulder" tubas, and they never spoke clearly or loudly enough to be heard in a 200 member band. As a "joke" one rehearsal we scraped up some fiberglass sousas, and even though they had a crappy tone, they projected better than the "new" convertible tubas (they were 3 years old at the time). On top of that, their balance is not worth a darn, and make your arms about 12 inches longer if you have a long parade (we had a 2 mile homecoming parade route) as there is no good way to carry them for an extended peroid of time. On the plus side, you do get a good upper body work-out.
