I started marching with a Buescher in sixth grade. All I had was a blue foam pad strapped to the thing. Even as a really skinny and short kid, it only took a month or so for my shoulder to get used to the weight. By eighth grade, I'd even quit using the sousaphone chair in concert band (without the shoulder pad) because I liked to feel the horn when I played.
Sooooo....., I think this harness thingy you've got in mind is addressing a non-problem. Kevin will adapt as all of us pre-fiberglass guys did.
