I absolutely agree. I have a couple of recordings of the LA Phil with Roger on tuba (Mahler 3/Mehta; Copland Appalachian Spring, Fanfare for the Common Man, Lincoln Portrait/Mehta) that I think have great ensemble playing. Also now, after your recommendation, I'm going to check out this Rachmaninov.

Just curious, what do you consider the "excesses of the Mehta era?" A lot of the recordings are fantastic, IMHO. LA certainly had it's own sound, different from the other big orchestras. In some ways, I really prefer it.

By the way, you'll really like the Revueltas CD. I borrowed it from a friend for a while and just may end up keeping it if he doesn't notice.
