I picked this recording up at Tower/Las Vegas yesterday for $5.99. I was amazed at not only the overall performance, but how majestically Roger Bobo played the tuba part. This recording should be in every tuba players library on how to play in an ensemble. there is a wonderful weight and prescence to the tuba that never overshadows the ENSEMBLE aspects of this piece. While I don't particularly care for the work, I am blown away by how well the overall balance of the ENSEMBLE is. I think, IMHO, that the excesses of the Mehta era have cast a poor light on the LA Phil, but this one recording has reaffirmed that it is a great orchestra. I am looking forward to getting my Reveultas CD from Amazon so I can hear Mr. Pearson and friends. Run, don't walk, to your nearest Tower Store and by the Rachmaninoff. It is an EMI re-release with Simon Rattle conducting. Thanks for putting up with this "review".
