I was surprised to hear that everyone does not take advantage of tuba
soloists to generate enthusiasm for band and for tubas. Then I moved
to the South and discovered what seems to be a racial component to tuba
playing where different races are preceived to play the tuba differently
(by members of each race involved). So, rather than looking upon the
recitals and recruitment concerts as a nice way to get everyone interested,
I have come to look upon them as a good way to diminish the preceived differences in playing and restore the the universality to music's preception. I am sorry
if this response is upsetting to some of you (I know this situation was to me) but it is
an accurate report of a state of affairs I find here. And we could easily
solve it.
