I'd say the only functional purpose would be to have access to instruments that sound like F tubas. The common F tuba has a very distinctive sound, unlike the larger sound typical on Eb tubas. However, like the Cervany 641 Eb tuba, you can also find Eb tubas that sound more like the typical F sound. My opinion is that if you also have access to one of these, there is no reason to learn F tuba unless you are simply curious about it. I feel there is no inherent advantage in playing Eb over F as long as you can do all the things you want on either.

My opinion for what its worth...
