I'd say start out with your 186, but constantly keep your eyes open (and build up your cash) for a BAT of some sort. Playing a 186 is fine in concert band where there are plenty of other tubists. It's also real good for all kinds of other ensembles. But at some point, you're going to be the only tubist in the back of the orchestra with a real big part stareing you in the face, playing in some real dead sounding modern hall. That's where the BAT will come in real handy. It's also going to be the sound that you'll be competeing against at auditions. By the way, there were several times I heard the L.A. Phil. with Bobo playing his 186, and I honestly had trouble hearing him. That's greatly because of the size and acoustics of the Dorothy Chandler hall, and where my seats were located. BAT's help to overcome just that kind of obstacle.
