In watching Roland Szentpali play at the TUSAB conference, I realized that it must be standard practice in that part of Europe to use the third valve in lieu of the 1-2 combination. I never once saw him use anything but the third valve for those notes.

A different tuning would perhaps take best advantage of that. His tuba was obviously tuned such that, from F, the Eb would be tuned on the first valve, the E on the second, and the D on the third. He used the fourth for the C on the staff, but I don't recall what he used for the C below the staff. It was remarkable, though, at how rarely he pressed more than one button.
