Quote from an auction description, a present one:

Tuba made in Manchester, England. Model Contesting - Class A, Serial #70949. In the key of BBb, made of brass. Valves are tight and functions very well. NO CASE!. Some minor dents and some wrinkles on the bell. Manchester, England was a center of tuba making, there was also a big prison in Manchester as well. Model prisoners and trustees were allowed to work at the tuba works. Some later started their own tuba works in Manchester and stayed and worked in Manchester. Tuba is beautifully silver plated and has very little wear. A good polish with some elbow grease will make this tuba bright and shiny. Bell diameter is 16" height is 35" and inside slide diameter is .710...
