Sorry, I have never come across this problem. I have removed tarnish from the exterior surfaces of silver instruments with an (I believe) Australian product called Tarn-Off, but all my instruments with slides that needed lapping have been untarnished.
I would think the grinding paste would work though: re-emphasising the note of caution, you can remove too much metal. This would scratch a lot less than steel wool!
