I know that Novotny, Torchinsky, K.V.Smith and other tuba players from the 1940's to the 70's were from the "old school". In general, they didn't play with the clarity and polish of today's tubists, but I still like some of those old recordings. I particularly like a few old Bernstein/NYPhil. recordings with Joe Novotny. He had a nice dark, heavy sound on the the Mahler 6 recording that Bernstein recorded in 1967, and the Tchaikovsky Symphony #6 rerecording, recorded in 1968( I think). Both were done by Columbia (now Sony Sclassical). One of the tubists in one of the top 5 Orchestras told me that Novotny had the heaviest sound out of all of the different orchestra tubists when he was in the NYPhil. He had a glorious sound! Anyone have any favorite "old school" players or recordings?

Thanks
