For me, being able to sing a piece before I play it represented a quantum leap in signt-reading. Solfege is a relatively painless way to go about learning to sing intervals. There are tons of books on the subject; I used Dannhäuser "Solfege des Solfeges", but the actual method book used probably doesn't matter much.
