Forty years ago, when I started playing tuba (sousaphone, actually) in high school, I was the only person in my school of about 1000 doing so. Didn't get to play in a 'section' until I made Districts about the second year. I had no lessons, but essentially taught myself from a method book with encouragement from the band director. Not an indicator of much of a market.
These days (at least in these pages) we argue the merits of starting high school students early on CC's because they might need the skills to get into a good school. ...and the pieces some of these kids are playing! yoicks
I think the anecdotal evidence is for higher demand. Thus... Economics 101.
