Shipping Costs

Need some advice...
I will be purchasing a horn soon, probably from a private source. I understand that to ship a tuba, the pricetag can be a shocker. On the other hand, I will have some time to make a road trip if doing this can save a few $$$. I also have an unusual resource - a friend of mine owns a six seat plane that he flies to the Bahamas 3-4 times a year ( all the way from upstate NY) and he may be willing to take me to the location of the tuba I buy if "the source" is within 4-6 hours flying time. Here's the problem... Will a BBb or CC tuba fit into the SMALL doors of a private plane (obviously you need to have flown in one to know). The instrument would almost certainly have a hard shell case. Just wondering if anybody has ideas or knows ways to save shipping costs or how to solve the "cargo space problem. Thanks for the input
