I remember reading somewhere that Mr. Jacobs himself wasn't happy with the recording of the VW. Having heard his recording of the VW, I'd have to agree with Joe S., he certainly wasn't at his prime.
While I've got the chance, go for the John Fletcher recording. Sublime.
