Perhaps I am not like most people, but I would argue that there can be dramatic differences between rotary and piston versions of the "same" horn. For example, the PT-6 (rotary) model is quite a bit smoother sounding than the piston-valved PT-6P, which has much more core and "punchy" quality (notes tend to pop out). Side by side, they definitely have a family resemblance in sound and playing, but they are more like cousins than sisters. For technical reasons as to why this is, consider that the PT-6P has a shorter leadpipe, different-shaped passages through the valves, and many differences in the wrap of the valve tubes; past the tuning slides, the horns are close to identical.
