The only dumb thing anyone ever does is to not ask enough questions prior to the purchase, or whatever else it is you are doing.
For practice purposes, any of the portable recorders will suffice. If you are looking to do a "real" CD, then go with what the experts suggest. By the way, the experts are just like the experts on this board and all have a different opinion. Part of the investigation process is to discover what type of recording device is best for you. Listen to all, then use your own experience to decide.
Some of us will do the recordings ourselves and others will spend the money to hire it done. Others will go to a recording studio. In the end, the sound that's created is what is the most important. (Not very profound, but still the truth.)
