If my tuba were to break a week before a concert, and the repair would take two weeks, you're saying I should buy another horn instead of borrowing one from a friend who isn't using his?
I post for argument's sake. The truth is the guy may be palnning on buying a new part, but it wont arrive in time. My BD has had that problem countless times.
